9 Careers You Can Have With a Degree in Psychology

career in psychology

A degree in psychology not only opens the door to the mind, but it can also open the door to a successful, very rewarding career. In South Africa, an undergraduate psychology degree is the first step on the path to being able to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in one of the professional psychology categories. With a view to helping you get the most out of your education, we take a look at these professions.

1. Clinical psychologist

Clinical psychology is a broad branch of psychology that focuses on diagnosing and treating mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders. Some of the more common disorders that might be treated include personality disorders, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Clinical psychologists work in a wide variety of healthcare settings, such as private-practice offices and hospitals, but they also work in schools, governmental agencies and industry.

2. Counselling psychologist

Counselling psychologists typically work with people facing life challenges and developmental problems and assist with optimising psychological wellbeing. They often work in the areas of career counselling, martial and family therapy, loss and bereavement to name but a few. They often work in private practice, at schools or at universities.

3. Educational psychologist

An educational psychologist is concerned with helping children or young people who are experiencing problems within an educational setting, with the aim of enhancing their learning. Challenges may include social or emotional problems, or learning difficulties. Work is with individual clients or groups and, in an advisory capacity, with teachers.

4. Industrial or organisational psychologist

An industrial or organisational psychologist applies the principles of psychology to human resources, sales, marketing, administration and management issues in the workplace. His or her job may include recruitment, development and training, policy planning and organisation analysis.

5. Research psychologist

Research psychologists are involved in the planning, developing and applying of psychological research methods. They are often involved in the development of psychological measures. Monitoring and evaluation of psychological interventions usually falls within their scope of practice. Most research psychologists work for universities, government offices and private corporations.

6. Neuropsychologist

Neuropsychologists are involved in assessing, diagnosing and intervening when psychological disorders are as a result of neurological conditions. Neuropsychologists often work with people suffering from traumatic brain injuries and neurological disorders. If you’re fascinated with the inner workings of the brain and central nervous system and how they relate to human behaviour, you might consider a career as a neuropsychologist.

7. Forensic psychologist

Essentially, forensic psychology involves applying psychology to the field of criminal investigation and the law. Forensic psychologists use their knowledge of psychological principles to understand different aspects of the legal system. Forensic psychology is one of the fastest-growing disciplines within psychology.

8. Registered counsellor

Registered counsellors can be seen as ‘emotional paramedics’ in cases of trauma, to intervene appropriately, and to refer when and where necessary. They provide short-term supportive counselling (excluding psychotherapy) in a range of environments with diverse individuals and groups, and identify (but not diagnose nor treat) possible mental health disorders, referring clients to the appropriate professionals. They provide psychological screening and intervention for the purposes of enhancing functioning.

9. Psychometrist

A psychometrist is trained in administering, scoring, interpreting and reporting on psychological assessments (psychometric tests). These assessments include cognitive, interest, aptitude and personality measures. Aside from working alongside a psychologist or psychiatrist, a psychometrist may work independently for a private company, a school or university, or for the government.

SACAP’s Bachelor of Applied Social Science degree is a comprehensive undergraduate psychology degree programme, providing a perfect springboard for those wishing to progress to Honours and Masters in order to become a psychologist.

The college’s Bachelor of Psychology professional degree, meanwhile, is approved by the HPCSA for the education and training of Registered Counsellors. Graduates of this programme will be eligible to sit the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology in the Registered Counsellor category in order to register with the HPCSA as Registered Counsellors. As a four-year NQF8 degree programme, the BPsych has a ‘built-in’ Honours equivalent. Graduates are therefore also able to articulate into a Masters programme with a view to becoming a psychologist.

Start your career today! Applications for Term Two 2016 are now open. Find out more information, on SACAP’s degree in psychology.

      Hello Teagan,

You need to complete an honours degree in Psychology. Then you need to complete a masters degree in forensic psychology. But South africa doesn’t offer a masters in forensic. It’s best to speak with your HOD and the matter.

I am a social worker and will like to pursue Counselling Psychology especially Honours. I completed my first BA degree majoring psychology and criminology at third level of study.

I passed psychology with 60% and later pursued social work where I was credited some courses and only completed social work in 3 years instead of 4.

    Greetings.

I’m Nhlanhla Ramothibe,a scholar from a technical high school. I’m highly interested in the career, read books about early childhood development and etc. I would like to have a degree in psychology and major in forensic psychology due to the story I over heard between a policeman and a victim who had been hijacked earlier to day. I’m a local dj how takes this field as a hobby due to the fact that I did not go to any training facility for the career. I would like to become a lecture in this field and link it with my hobby as means of helping people.

I currently read psychology books to solve my day to day problems and get through stressful situations. This helps a lot because it helps my vocabulary and en riches the mind. To day I read about poverty speech and the fact that women have a high risk of depression as compared to men. And that a person who has faced depression is more likely to suffer from it again.

This is an advantage for a scholar because I found last year that children who grow up with single parents are more likely to face challenges rather than a child who grew up with both parents beside him\her. And I found out that my mother’s been suffering from a specific thing in this chapter. I really want to have this career as means of being a better person in the future can I get registration forms for a course in 2018 because I’m currently in grade eleven. As we pressured to register before there’s no space left and this would result in me taking a gap year.

    This is my question:
How can I manage to deal with my uncle who takes a drug and alcohol on a day to day basis and an aunt who is a pensioner but keeps on harassing my mother and wants to take ownership of the house? I’m not so free to enter the house as before as I’m assessed on what I do inside the house and can’t even us the dining room to do my homework and projects. I currently cook in side my room and there isn’t enough space for the fridge to fit in which is in my uncles room whom takes the drug(a pip with copper and a pill which is inside it, (lekwete) in our language). He is a shop lifter and does this for a living. How can I help them?

    2. My other uncle speaks alone, I think there’s a monkey voice which communicates with him I’m not sure. I read that they hear their own voice which seems to come from another source. How can I help him?

Hi. I have a diploma in counselling and communication from SACAP actually and for the past 2 years I’ve been struggling to get a job with it. I am currently not in a good position to study further became of financial restrictions. Isn’t there anything you can help me with, perhaps organisations looking to employ counsellors? I would genuinely appreciate your help 🙁

      Tumi,

There are many jobs you could get with a bachelors degree only, but you will not be able to be a registered counsellor with HPCSA. Consider contacting your university’s career guidance department for further assistance.

    Hi,
I am a British citizen with a UK bachelors degree in psychology and a masters in mental health research. Would I still need to complete a Bpsch degree in order to be registered with the HPCSA? If so, do you accept international students?

    Reply
    • SACAP

      Elle,

Students with international qualifications firstly need to contact SAQA in order to have their qualifications converted into an NQF level in South Africa. If the undergraduate degree in psychology is on NQF level 7, you will be able to apply for Honours level in South Africa. However, if your degree is on NQF level 8 already, you will be able to apply for Masters level and after completion will be able to register with the HPCSA as a Psychologist. You are also able to apply for a BPsych equivalence degree in order to bridge over to the practicum of the BPsych degree (only if the HPCSA makes this equivalence degree available in Counselling stream). SACAP has applied for this BPsych equivalence offering as well, on top of our BPsych degree, and is waiting for approval from the HPCSA.

      Mumsy,

Unfortunately this cannot be done through SACAP. Your best option would be to contact the HPCSA and ask them which institutions are offering this programme.

What are the options to become a registered counsellor if doing the BAppSocSci degree?

Are there some sort of bridging courses or equivalence programs out there?

    Reply
    • SACAP

      Fabio,

The BAppSocSci degree do not lead to registration with the HPCSA, only the BPsych does.

Unfortunately not at this stage. Students will apply for honours and Masters after the BAppSocSci degree.
