Students are assessed on both assignments and exams. Two assignments in essay format is expected for each module and a lecturer has the option to ask for a third summative exam for each module. This varies from module to module.

Career options for a bachelor’s degree in Psychology can be limiting if the qualification is purely theoretical. SACAP offers a combination between theory and practical skills. This enables students to be employed as Counsellors and work in a supportive community environment.

Does SACAP offer a Honours programme in Psychology?

Hi, I am busy studying a BA majoring in psychology. Do you have any courses equivalent to an honours programme? Or what can you recommend. Thank you

    Reply
    • SACAP

      Nekitta,

Currently our highest qualification is an undergraduate (NQF 7). For students with Psychology background, we would recommend the Advanced Certificate, in order to gain practical skills and fieldwork experience. This is a 15 month qualification and many students find it easier to be able to get into Honours with practical supervised experience.

Registrations are now open for term 1 (2014) and will close in the first week in February 2014. However, please keep in mind that the demand in the first term is higher than any other term intakes, and it is suggested that students start their application process in 2013, in order to avoid disappointment.

    How to become a psychologist

The minimum entry requirements for a Higher Certificate in Counselling and Communication is a matric. Students are only allowed to apply as mature students over the age of 24 and this way they may be able to enter such a qualification, hence they have gained experience in the field, either through volunteer work or being employed in a similar field.

      Nicole,

There are several routes to study in the field of Counselling Psychology. An important component for you to become a counsellor would be practical fieldwork. This module is available in the Diploma in Counselling and Communication, as well as the undergraduate degree in Psychology. Depending on your highest qualification, you can start with any of the qualifications. You are welcome to send us your National Senior Certificate, and we will be able to assist and recommend the best programme for your needs.

Does UCT/UWC recognize this degree should you wish to do a honours/post graduate degree?
Whats the difference between this degree and what the above 2 universities offer?

    Reply
    • SACAP

      Adnaan,

All Higher Education Institutions will consider other qualifications, if the qualification is fully accredited. SACAP is fully accredited and therefore in line with all other Higher Education Institutions in South Africa. However, it will be up to the specific institution whether they would accept modules into their qualifications or not, it will depend on the course work completed. All degrees are offered differently at different institutions and if the undergraduate at SACAP is compared with Universities, the major difference would be the practical aspect in our qualification. The degree includes 200 hours of fieldwork, our classes are small and interactive (25 students per class max). The modules are also very specific to Counselling Psychology and equips the student with both the theoretical and practical insight of the module.

We offer fieldwork placement to our students in the Diploma, Advanced Certificate and undergraduate degree. This is their last module and they will be placed for 200 hours in the field. However internships are not yet available for students who completed their studies at a different institution and need to complete their practicum only.

          Layla,

Unfortunately SACAP is unable to assist with only the practicum for students who have completed studies elsewhere. However, you could register for our Advanced Certificate in Counselling (18 months long) which might be a good option due to the practical modules and 200 hours fieldwork which is included. See more about the course here: http://www.sacap.edu.za/courses/advanced-certificate/

    Reply
    • SACAP

SACAP will require the Grade 12 results of all applicants. However, if an applicant is still busy with their Grade 12, we will accept them provisionally on their grade 11 results. The applicant will then provide the final Grade 12 result as soon it has been released. This enables the applicant to pay their registration fee for the year and receive their class options for the trimester.

      Hi Maria,

Both face to face students on campus as well as online learning students, can choose to either study full time or part time. The difference between full time and part time studies would be the number of modules per term. Full time students (face to face or online) will have 3-4 modules per term and part time students (face to face and online) will have 2-3 modules per term.

Students who attend classes as face to face students on campus, can meet with a student advisor and discuss their time slots and class availabilities. these class time are from 08:30 – 11:30 / 11:45 – 14:45 / 15:00 – 18:00 and 18:15 – 21:15.

Online learning students do not have to attend any classes.

Start your career in Neuro Psychology with SACAP

Does this degree allow me to do industrial psychology or neuro psychology?

    Reply
    • SACAP

It is recommended that in order to become an Industrial Psychologist, you start with an undergraduate degree in the field of Industrial Psychology and then proceed to your Honours and Masters degrees. Neuro-Psychology would be achieved by doing an undergraduate in Psychology (BAppSocSci), and then you would need to specialize in post graduate studies specifically in Neuro Psychology.

      To summarize:
Industrial Psychology — start with a specific degree in the field of Industrial Psychology. Neuro Psychology — start with SACAP’s undergraduate degree in Psychology (BAppSocSci).

      Hi Maria,

SACAP has three intakes for new students each year, namely February, May and September. The next intake for students would be 16 September 2013 and registrations are now open. Should you want to join us as a new student in term 1 (2014), you can apply and register from 16 September 2013 onwards. You are welcome to forward us your application form with your highest qualification, in order for us to determine if you qualify for the degree program. You need to have exemption in matric to enter the degree, which means you need to have English higher than 50% as well as four other subjects, this can be higher grade or standard grade.

Become a qualified psychologist with SACAP

Can one work as an independent psychologist/practitioner on completion of degree?

    Reply
    • SACAP

      Hi Stephen,

In order to register as a Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) you must have a minimum of a Masters Degree in psychology and have completed a one-year internship. The traditional study path to become a Psychologist is therefore to complete an undergraduate degree in psychology, then an Honours degree and then a Masters degree, followed by an internship. SACAP’s Bachelor of Applied Social Science (BAppSocSci) is an accredited undergraduate degree qualification in psychology. Graduates of this programme would therefore be eligible to apply for entrance into a psychology Honours programme at any public university or private college offering a psychology Honours programme and from there move onto Masters and ultimately professional registration with the HPCSA as a Psychologist. The BAppSocSci offers a comprehensive theoretical foundation in psychology in keeping with other undergraduate psychology programmes. The unique benefit of the BAppSocSci is that, where most undergraduate psychology programmes are purely theory based, the BAppSocSci also includes the training and development of skills as well as 3 months (200 hours) of fieldwork. Graduates of the BAppSocSci are therefore well equipped to pursue a variety of possible career or further study paths in mental health services, human resources and other related fields.
