What you can expect
Throughout the qualification, you’ll develop high levels of theoretical engagement and intellectual autonomy that leads to robust theoretical understanding in the following areas:
- What it means to be a Registered Counsellor with a focus on the unique scope of practice of a Registered Counsellor.
- Psychological screening, basic assessment and psychological interventions aimed at enhancing personal functioning in a variety of contexts.
- How to provide psychological interventions with individuals and groups.
- How to promote mental health through developing and presenting life skills training and psychoeducation workshops.
- How to evaluate and apply best fit research design, methodology and analysis for community-based research.

You will be eligible to register professionally with the HPCSA and work in professional practice as a Registered Counsellor. This means that you can:
- Provide psychological services that are focused on prevention and primary intervention for psychological difficulties in diverse community contexts as well as the promotion of mental health.
- Perform psychological screening, basic assessment and psychological interventions with individuals and groups, aimed at enhancing personal functioning.
- Provide preventative and developmental counselling services for individuals and groups.
- Provide psychoeducation and mental health promotion on a range of topics.

Admission requirements
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
All applicants for the Bachelor of Social Science Honours in Psychology [BPsych Equivalent Programme] are required to undergo a screening and selection process. As per the Health Professions Council of South Africa’s requirements, the maximum number of applicants accepted into this programme is limited to 15 students per approved campus, i.e. Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria campuses.
- A minimum of an appropriate Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7) or appropriate Advanced Diploma with a Psychology major, having achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 65% and above in all Psychology subjects undertaken in the exit level/final year of study OR
- Applicants 24 years of age and older who do not meet the above requirements should provide a portfolio of evidence demonstrating formal, informal and non-formal knowledge, training, work experience and/or learning in a cognate field of study equivalent to an NQF Level 7 qualification to support admission to the programme on the basis of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

As this is a South African registered professional programme, preference will be given to South African citizens wishing to apply for this programme.
Foreign nationals wishing to apply for this programme will need a valid and specific study visa for the full duration of the programme, and will be required to liaise with the HPCSA in order to learn of any particular requirements, including obtaining a valid working visa, in order to register and practice as a Registered Counsellor in South Africa.

- As per the Health Professions Council of South Africa’s requirements, the maximum number of applicants accepted into the Bachelor of Social Science Honours in Psychology [BPsych Equivalent Programme] is limited to 15 students per approved campus, i.e. Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria campuses.
- Acceptance is subject to a stringent selection process that includes, inter alia: applicants meeting the minimum entrance requirements, completion of application forms, assessment of academic and non-academic aptitudes and competencies, interview with a panel and final selection interviews.
