Career Opportunities
Articulation:
SACAP’s Postgraduate Certificate in Education may be eligible for entry into the following qualifications where the minimum entrance requirements have been met:
- Bachelor of Education Honours degree
- Bachelor of Social Science Honours degree.
- Graduates may also be eligible to enter a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) Equivalent Programme.
Career Prospects:
SACAP’s PGCE will qualify the successful graduate for potential employment as a Life Orientation and an English subject specialist and be eligible for registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) which is a prerequisite for employment in the education sector of South Africa.
1.As a LO (Life Orientation) Educator:
- You will be equipped to teach in varying school contexts. Given the fast pace and social pressures of society, schools are increasingly acknowledging the need for specialist Life Orientation educators to prepare learners psycho-socially to deal with various challenges.
- You will have extensive knowledge of Guidance, Counselling and Specialised Learning Support and will be eligible for employment in a range of public and private schools as well as technical, vocational and educational training colleges.
- You would have a sound understanding of social-emotional learning and development and would also be an ideal candidate for NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) working within the education sector.
- Once you have acquired sufficient experience and proven your capabilities as an educator you will be eligible for senior positions in your subject specialisation at district, provincial and national levels, as well as in directorates within the education department such as Safer Schools, Learner Behaviour Management and Values-Driven Education.
- Major entities within the corporate sector are increasingly directing their Corporate Social Investments (CSI) towards youth development projects and with a qualification such as Life Orientation which focuses on the development of the youth you are ideally positioned to lead in such ventures.
- You would be promoting values-driven education not only in the LO classroom but school-wide and in so doing take leadership in the cultivation of a healthy ethos and culture among staff and learners. The successful implementation of values-driven education manifests in the academic and extramural success of the school. Being the driving force behind the success of the school augurs well for the promotion prospects of the educator.
2. As a Guidance, Counselling and Specialised Learning Support Educator:
You would be involved in career guidance and support of learners with learning barriers. You would also where necessary work closely with staff and management and would make referrals to psychosocial services. This inadvertently implies involvement in almost every aspect of school functionality, thereby acquiring vast knowledge relevant to school management as well as developing a wide array of leadership and management skills. This positions you ideally for promotion posts within schools, at district offices and at various directorates within the provincial department of education.
Working with children who are the most vulnerable in our society, with parents and the community at large you would develop strong social-emotional skills and exceptional communication skills which would hold you in good stead in any position of leadership in the future.
3. As an English educator, your career path could have numerous trajectories:
- You can continue to teach English but move from one teaching level to the next, or you can leave the classroom and go into administration instead. For example, an English teacher might start teaching at the Senior Phase level and move on to teaching in the FET (Further Education and Training) phase. This focus on progressing within the learning area of English could lead to ultimately becoming an English Subject Advisor or an English lecturer at a tertiary institution.
- Another possibility is that once you have acquired sufficient experience and proven your capabilities as an English teacher you might choose to become involved in the administration of the subject by becoming a HOD and possibly get more involved in school administration and leadership by becoming a deputy principal and ultimately a principal.
- Teaching English in the Middle East and Far East is becoming a very popular choice for newly qualified educators.
- Teaching English online to foreign students is becoming a popular option for those who wish to work from home.
