SACAP’s Master of Social Science in Community Mental Health Promotion is a two-year degree that seeks to develop leaders who can strategically and innovatively address community mental health challenges and enhance community wellbeing.
Candidates will develop the capacity to act as catalysts to bring together various sectors to tackle the social and mental health challenges that our country faces. They will also be encouraged in social innovation and intervention and develop skills for policy development and advocacy around community mental health issues.
The Master of Social Science in Community Mental Health Promotion also seeks to build a continuous entrepreneurial mind-set in order to harness opportunities within community contexts.

Masters scholarship opportunity

The Vusisizwe Scholarship, which loosely translated means “nation building, transforming the nation, or empowering the nation” is offered part-time on SACAP’s Online Campus for a maximum duration of two years. The award covers application, registration and tuition fees only and is intended to support a change maker that has – among other qualities – academic acumen, experience and passion and career path related to community mental health promotion, community development or a similar field.

Admission requirements
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
All applicants for this programme are required to undergo a screening and selection process. Acceptance into this programme is limited to a maximum of 20 students per campus per academic year.
- A relevant Bachelor Honours Degree (NQF level 8), relevant Postgraduate Diploma, or SAQA verified equivalent qualification in a recognised cognate field with a grade point average (GPA) of 65% or above. OR
- Applicants 24 years of age and older who do not meet the above requirements should provide a portfolio of evidence demonstrating either by examination, research experience, publication, considerable relevant work experience in the field, or a record of appropriate training and/or development, that they have reached a level in the subject or a cognate subject, that is equivalent to the learning outcomes of an Honours Bachelor’s degree/NQF 8 qualification. RPL applications for this programme are only considered for admission into the programme and not for advanced standing or module exemption.

Course details
This 2-year part-time programme is designed to fit around your working life. You have the flexibility to study online. There are only 4 intensive modules over the duration of the programme, making it easier to block out your time in your diary.
- Duration: 2 years, part-time
- Modules: 10, including core modules, intensive modules, workshops and a mini dissertation.
- Accreditation: Aligned with the National Skills Development Strategy 111 and the National Development Plan 2030. It is NQF9 and CHE-accredited.
