Alice’s decision to study applied psychology is driven by a community focus.

Once she has successfully completed her Bachelors of Applied Social Science degree and honours, she hopes to take her learnings back to Zimbabwe and raise awareness of the importance of counselling.

“If more graduates would consider giving their time towards community psychology it might help prevent gangsterism and drug abuse and violence in the poorer communities. With more focus on preventative measures the communities may be more habitable and the wellbeing of Africa may become a reality.”

Two things that really stand out for Alice about SACAP are the journey of self-transformation and the importance of the college’s Work Integrated Learning module: “You don’t only learn about other people’s problems, you become more self-aware through the studies at SACAP. It’s eye opening and you aim to become a better person before you get in the field to help others. It’s a growth experience. And the work done throughout the modules is not only theoretical but also practical. Interpersonal communication and the fundamentals of a helping relationship give you a clear picture of how it can be in a counselling situation.”
